How Gaia Herbs’ fiber products help to fund vocational training for people with disabilities
Gaia Herbs’ work with Transylvania Vocational Services (TVS) embodies our belief in social sustainability through local partnerships. While our liquid extraction takes place in the Gaia Herbs facility, blending and packaging of powders such as ChiaFresh Daily Fiber and Rejuve Gentle Daily Fiber take place in TVS’s 60,000 square foot plant which is located in our same town of Brevard, NC.
TVS is a nonprofit organization committed to providing skills development and career opportunities for people with disabilities and has their own rich history of sustainability.
40,000
Pounds of food which TVS donated in 2011 to humanitarian efforts in Haiti
120
Number of people employed by TVS, most of whom are disabled and can be offered vocational evaluation, work training, and life skills training through TVS.
45
Years in which TVS has operated to enrich the lives of the disabled
2
Group homes operated by TVS. Each home provides a family atmosphere for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and a live-in manager.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
The distance from door-to-door of our two facilities is less than 7 miles. Transporting finished product from TVS to our warehouse creates a very small carbon footprint.
SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
Becky Alderman, Operation Director at TVS, sums it up best. “We’re a small business with a social mission. The more profit we make, the more people we serve.”
ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY
TVS and Gaia Herbs are two of the larger employers in our community. By working with each other, we help to strengthen the economic security of not only our two companies, but our local economy as well.
