Busy Bees

Everything is planted! Gaia’s greenhouses and hoop houses are emptied and all the herbs are thriving in the 250-acres of fertile Appalachian soil. This is the debut of the flowering season here on the Gaia farm. California Poppies turn their flowering heads like a sundial, much like the majestic sunflower, to make the most of Nature’s rays. The poppies will be harvested when they reach a 70 percent seed population stage, the time when the seeds contain the most potent medicine. Fifteen acres of Holy Basil, Poppy’s next-door neighbor, is getting ready bloom any day now in preparation for a late-July harvest.

Across the farm, the vivid purple-pink Echinacea Purpurea- flowers are contrasted against a backdrop of stormy summer skies, streaked with dark blue clouds and occasional flashes of lightening, reminding us of the power and vitality of the growing season. And the Echinacea fields are buzzing with honeybees …a good time to add supers to the hive bodies. A close look at the flowers unveils tiny pollen granules that were extracted and left behind from the busy bees that live at the farm. Queen and worker bees maintain ‘pollen baskets’, little pockets on their hind legs, to store the yellow, orange or red pollen until they transport it back to the hive for honey production. With 3,500 pounds of Echinacea to be harvested this week, we’re sure to keep the hive owners busy!

Ecologically Harvested is a term that describes all herbs sold by Gaia Herbs that are not Certified Organic. Ecologically Harvested herbs include herbs that are harvested in their natural habitat, (i.e., wild harvested) according to specific guidelines for harvesting these herbs (i.e., away from roads and industry, as well as guidelines to avoid overharvesting). Our term, Ecologically Harvested, also includes herbs that are grown in managed woodland areas, fields designated for specific herbs, and herbs that are grown by indigenous growers, such as Kava Kava. All Ecologically Harvested herbs pass pesticide and heavy metal testing as well as microbial testing, prior to release.
