Keep Calm and Kava On

In the fast-paced nature of today’s busy world, it can feel like stress is unavoidable. Finding a moment of peace may be a challenge, but luckily herbs are our allies—especially the ones that can support a healthy response to stress.*

The History of Kava

It’s believed that Kava originated on the archipelago of Vanuatu, whose name means “The Land Eternal.” Kava has been domesticated throughout the Oceanic region, which includes Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia. It is found in places referred to by many as "paradise," including Fiji, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, and Hawaii, where it is called Awa.

A member of the Pepper family, this South Pacific root has been brewed into a calming tea that has been used for centuries in different ceremonies promoting social, cultural, and religious enhancement.* Oceanic cultures revere this plant, and its importance to them is much deeper than support for relaxation.*

Kava bars serving tea made from this root have started popping up all over the country, showing this revered herb has been gaining mainstream acceptance and popularity.

Our Favorite Kava-Containing Products

Kava plant in nature

At Gaia Herbs, our Kava is wild cultivated on the Vanuatu Islands. The plants are propagated and managed in the dense forests of these remote tropical islands, simulating the environment in which it is naturally found. They are then brought to our facility, where it is tested to meet our standards of purity, potency, and integrity. Our attention to quality begins with fingerprinting our Kava as Piper methysticum, rather than Piper wichmanii, or Tudei Kava. Due to a higher potential for negative effects with this more potent, wild variety, we focus on safety and efficacy in our Kava, so choose to use the Piper methysticum variety in our products. All of this can be seen with the unique ID number that comes with each Kava product at Meet Your Herbs®, the world’s first herb traceability platform.
