Sandy Hook Healing Project

About the Sandy Hook Healing Project

Almost as soon as the news broke of the tragic events of Newtown, CT in December 2012, an herbalist friend-of-Gaia Herbs contacted us to ask if we could assist with a program she was involved with called the Sandy Hook Healing Project. Their intention was to immediately create a healing center at a centrally located facility to serve and support the families, teachers, and first responders in the community and to be opened around-the-clock for two solid weeks throughout the holiday season.

Gaia Herbs responded by overnight shipping herbal supplements, herbal teas, and GaiaKids liquid extracts for the opening of the clinic. And after being so moved by this project, our investment firm also sent a cash donation in support.

What started as an empty warehouse space turned into a healing center within 48 hours, completely through local grass roots efforts and generous product donations from companies like Gaia Herbs. A dedicated team created an intimate living room space and a kitchen area where warm food and tea was being served day and night. They created a children’s space, where children could come play and create and work with a variety of art therapists. They erected 10 healing rooms to be used for massage, reiki, counseling, acupuncture, chiropractic care and more. They offered multiple yoga classes on the hour and herbal supplements and teas were passed out to individuals upon leaving their sessions.

After the initial 2-week intensive project was completed, the healing team used the remaining herbal products and donations to create Healing Baskets for Newtown teachers and first responders.

We were honored to have been part of such an incredible program and our hearts remain in support of all the efforts dedicated to helping the Newtown community heal.

Ecologically Harvested is a term that describes all herbs sold by Gaia Herbs that are not Certified Organic. Ecologically Harvested herbs include herbs that are harvested in their natural habitat, (i.e., wild harvested) according to specific guidelines for harvesting these herbs (i.e., away from roads and industry, as well as guidelines to avoid overharvesting). Our term, Ecologically Harvested, also includes herbs that are grown in managed woodland areas, fields designated for specific herbs, and herbs that are grown by indigenous growers, such as Kava Kava. All Ecologically Harvested herbs pass pesticide and heavy metal testing as well as microbial testing, prior to release.
