People & Community

Our impact starts with people. People who care for the land, support our mission, and strengthen our community.

Farmworker Fairness

  • Brand‑New Farm Crew Housing: In 2024, Gaia Herbs® opened on‑site housing for our seasonal farm crew. These homes provide safe, comfortable, and community‑oriented living. With proximity to the fields, crew members can rest, cook together, and feel at home while working the land.
  • Healthcare Access: 100% of our farmworkers were offered access to care through our partnership with Vecinos,a nonprofit providing equitable, culturally centered healthcare for Latinx and farmworker communities across western North Carolina.

Farmworkers face some of the most difficult and dangerous working conditions in the U.S. Less than 20% of North Carolina’s 150,000 farmworkers receive healthcare because of barriers like language, transportation, and isolation. Vecinos bridges these gaps through bilingual mobile and outpatient clinics offering primary and behavioral health services, pharmacy access, and wellness support.

This partnership helps ensure that farmworkers (the hands behind every harvest) have access to the healthcare and respect they deserve.

“Just as we engage in deep attention to soil impact characteristics on the Gaia Herbs® Farm, such as observing moisture levels and root health, our awareness of the quality of relationships we have with our fellow crew members is vital to the health of the farm."

"Demonstrating mutual respect through not only tangible actions like providing dignified housing, but through actions that support behavioral health, such as yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises, enables a collective intelligence to bring our best selves across all farm operations, each other, and the flora and fauna that share this land we have the privilege of stewarding. Our harvests depend as much on soil quality as the hands that sow the seeds.”

- Kate Renner, Director of Farm Operations
