Since 1987, Gaia Herbs has lived our mission of connecting people, plants, and planet to create healing. This is the core of our business, and we fulfill this through a steadfast commitment to our impact triad of Personal Wellbeing, Planetary Health, and Responsible Business Operations. We believe it is our ethical and social responsibility to be stewards of these principles, and they are our constant guide in the pathway forward for Gaia Herbs.
Our Impact Mission
How We Take Action
Personal Wellbeing
This is the core of our business operations, and the foundation on which our pillars of Purity, Potency, and Transparency are built. We work not only to provide potent, pure, and clean formulations, but to empower people to take control of their health journey.
Product Quality & Traceability
Personal Wellbeing begins with quality products, and we believe consumers deserve to know where their herbs came from. We support this with:
The world's first transparency and traceability platform, Meet Your Herbs gives consumers access to quality testing and sourcing information for their product, down to the batch number, so they can trust their herbs are quality tested.
ISO Certified Laboratory
To ensure customers are receiving a science-backed final product, we maintain an International Organization of Standardization laboratory, confirming we have proper testing methods and management systems in place to validate products for purity, potency, and integrity.
Scientific & Herbal Leadership
We believe we have the responsibility to empower our customers in their health journeys. We do this through the following initiatives:
A resource for healthcare practitioners to empower their patients to confidently pursue their health and wellness goals.
A board of diverse practitioners who help us stay abreast of current issues and developments in the medical community, keeping us on the foreground of innovation.
Herbal Education
We share expert knowledge and scientific backed information on herbal and natural health solutions to inspire others to experience the power of holistic health solutions. We encourage all Gaia customers to discover their herbs' origins with Meet Your Herbs, and provide herbal information in our Herb Reference Guide.
Planetary Health
We depend on the natural environment to produce our products, and are keenly aware that the health of the planet is essential. We strive toward environmental regulations in everything we do, from our USDA Certified facility, to our responsible sourcing methods and our ROC(R) certified organic farm.
Environmental Stewardship Program
Gaia Herbs has a dedicated Environmental Stewardship Program, which works hard to adapt, mitigate, and – in some cases – reverse climate change in every aspect of our operations. From our partnerships, to our packaging, to our pollinator plants, Gaia's Environmental Impact Program is integrated into every decision at Gaia Herbs.
Regenerative Organic Agriculture
Quality products start with healthy soil. We are committed to regenerative organic agriculture practices, both at our Gaia Farm and in our sourcing partners:
Regenerative Organic Certification
The Gaia Farm maintains ROC Silver Level Certification, recognized for a commitment to practices that focus on regenerating soil health and ensuring fair and ethical treatment of our seasonal farm workers.
The Gaia Farm is also certified organic by Oregon Tilth
Responsible Business Operations
We set high standards for our business practices, from our B-Corps certification to our Public Benefit Corporation status, we make decisions holistically, prioritizing people and planet above profit. A few of the ways we commit to responsible operations include:
Stakeholder Accountability
We know it's people who make Gaia Herbs a great company. We are committed to serving our stakeholders – not just our shareholders – through making business decisions that put people before profits. We do this through:
Certified B Corporation status: In 2018, Gaia Herbs became B-Corp Certified, meaning we operate at the highest levels of transparency, and social and environmental accountability.
Public Benefit Corporation status
In 2022, we brought our commitment to stakeholder accountability a step further to serving all stakeholders by becoming a Public Benefit Corporation. This governance structure holds us accountable to all of our stakeholders.
Gaia Herbs has a specific public benefit of improving human health and well-being through natural products produced using sustainable and ethical methods.
Blue Zones Certified Worksite
Gaia Herbs is proud to be certified by the Blue Zones Project for creating a culture and environment that makes healthy choices easier for employees. From our Wellness Committee to our employee benefits, to our emphasis on employee well-being, we are always hard at work ensuring the best possible worksite experience for our staff.
Seasonal Farmworker Program
Each year, through the H2A visa program, we employ approximately 30 farmworkers who make the journey from San Luis Potosi, Mexico to spend the growing and harvesting season on our farm. Most of our farm crew has been returning for years, including a few for more than 20 years. In 2021, we enhanced our commitment to farm worker fairness by focus by focusing on four key impact areas: travel and lodging to and from Mexico, wages & benefits, on-site housing, and health & wellness advocacy. We partner with organizations to ensure we are always acting to support our mission of serving as a model farm in migrant farmworker treatment.
Employee Engagement
Our employees are our most important stakeholders. As one of the largest employers in Transylvania County, North Carolina, we take our commitment to our employees seriously, prioritizing the employee experience. Gaia Herbs is proud to be Living Wage Certified, a Blue Zones Certified Worksite, and to offer benefits that make Gaia Herbs a company committed to our employees. Responsible Partnerships
There's a lot of relationships that keep Gaia Herbs running, and we strive to build partnerships with individuals and organizations that share our commitments to Personal Well-being, Planetary Health, and Responsible Business Operations.
Ethical Sourcing
What we can't grow at the Gaia Farm, we source from where ingredients grow best. We believe in ethical and socially responsible sourcing, including sourcing fair trade herbs and ingredients, and partnering with growers who practice biodynamic, organic, and ROC agriculture practices. We go the extra (3,000) miles when sourcing ingredients, seeking to ensure our ingredients are certified ethically traded, including ingredients that are certified ROC, FairWild, and Fair for Life. We are also a certified partner and brand holder for FairWild. These certifications ensure that both a fair price is being paid for certain ingredients, as well as the ecosystem in which they are grown is being managed in a way that will ensure the future of the herb trade.
Community Support
We believe we true change starts in your local community, and we have a responsibility to the communities in which we operate. We do this through donating not only our product but our time to our local communities to ensure we truly live our mission.
Volunteer Time Off Program
Each year, every Gaia Herbs employee receives 16 hours of paid volunteer time off (VTO) to donate time to mission-aligned organizations and initiatives in our local communities.
Raw Material and Product Donations: Our community giving program goes beyond just monetary donations. In an effort to increase herbal access to communities both in North Carolina and across the country, each year we donate approximately $300,000 worth of products and raw materials to various non-profits, schools, organizations, and events that are working to improve community health and well-being.
