Withania Somnifera, most commonly called Ashwagandha, is a small perennial shrub. Its roots are harvested in winter often from poor and disturbed soils extending from parts of the Middle East, through India into western China and south into parts of Africa. Ashwagandha belongs to the Solanaceae or Nightshade family, along with other plants like Goji berry and Datura, and common foods like tomatoes and potatoes.

It is a dynamic plant that is classified as a ‘rasayana’ in Ayurvedic herbalism, or a rejuvenating tonic. The modern term to describe Ashwagandha would be ‘adaptogen’. Ashwagandha has a long and varied history of use.

The use of Ashwagandha root has been documented in various traditional Ayurvedic texts, the oldest being the Kasyapa-Samhita from 600 A.D. The common and Latin names of the plant also point towards the common uses of the plant. In Latin, ‘somnium’ means to dream, and ‘fer’ means to carry.

The species name ‘somnifera’ roughly translates to ‘dream carrier’, a reflection of the plant’s longstanding role in Ayurvedic tradition.

Fruiting Body

Cordyceps Sinensis were so highly valued in traditional Chinese herbalism that they were exclusively available to the emperor’s family in ancient China. Recently, cultivated varieties (Cordyceps Militaris) have been developed. The fruiting bodies of these are cultivated on nutritious substrate, and they are therefore vegan.

Research has shown that C. Militaris and C. Sinensis provide similar support, and they are used interchangeably in traditional Chinese herbalism and other branches of herbalism.

A mushroom goes through many stages during its life cycle, just like any plant or animal. Each part of a mushroom has unique attributes that support wellness and serve a different purpose for the organism, but it’s the fruiting bodies that receive the most attention and are the most familiar.

Fruiting bodies emerge from the substrate on which they grow - such as trees or fallen logs to become the part of the mushroom we recognize. They’re the above-ground part that we can see when we walk through the woods, and they’re also what have been traditionally foraged and consumed, in food and supplements.

The Cordyceps Mushroom Gaia Herbs® uses is sourced from Nammex from their Certified Organic growing operations in China. They pioneered Organic Certification for mushroom growers in China.

These mushrooms are grown in remote mountainous regions in open air farms more similar to the their natural environment. However, they do not contain any substrates or mycellium, only fruiting bodies.
