Astragalus Propinquus (Huang Qi) has been a foundational herb in Traditional Chinese herbalism for hundreds of years.It is included in traditional Chinese herbal formulas alongside Wei Qi (Chi), or the conceptual “shield,” as part of longstanding cultural practices for overall vitality.

Sweet and nourishing in flavor, Astragalus has traditionally been incorporated into soups and decoctions as part of Chinese herbal culinary traditions.

In traditional Chinese herbalism, Astragalus is described as having an affinity for the “spleen” meridian within the classical framework of Chinese herbal theory. Astragalus is part of the Milk Vetch or Fabaceae family.

The Schisandra (Schisandra Chinensis) plant is sometimes referred to as Chinese Magnolia Vine or Five-Flavored Fruit. The five distinct flavors found in the berry correspond to the five phases or Elements of traditional Chinese herbalism: Sour (Wood), Bitter (Fire), Sweet (Earth), Acrid (Metal) and Salty (Water).

Hence, its name Wu Wei Zi in Chinese. It is considered a Harmonizing Tonic or “King” remedy in Chinese herbalism because of its well-balanced, energetic nature. Other Herbs in this category include, but are not limited to: Licorice, Dong Quai, Panax Ginseng, Jujube Dates, and Bupleurum.

At Gaia Herbs®, we oversee every step from seed to soil to supplement to create the highest-quality herbal supplements. In keeping with this view, in 2025, our Schisandra supplier successfully registered northern schisandra berry as the world’s first FairWild Certified source in the pristine forest region of Jilin Province, China.

Supplier representatives visited the wild collection site in August 2025, confirming the implementation of sustainable harvesting and management practices. The certification covers 250 acres managed under FairWild standards within a larger 7,500-acre forest ecosystem.

The operation is supported by 10 full-time employees and 20 seasonal collectors, all of whom are trained through the rigorous FairWild standards program to ensure responsible wild collection, biodiversity conservation, and long-term resource sustainability.

Looking ahead to 2026, the supplier plans to expand its collector workforce to increase annual yield and pursue organic certification for the wild forest area. In addition to supporting sustainable sourcing, a portion of every purchase is returned directly to the local community where the raw materials are harvested.
