If you’ve explored herbal supplements, chances are you’ve come across Berberine. What many people don’t realize is that Berberine (Berberis Aristata) isn’t actually an herb; it’s a naturally occurring plant compound found in a variety of botanicals, including barberry, goldenseal, Oregon grape, tree turmeric, and California poppy.

For centuries, these plants have been valued in traditional practices such as traditional Chinese herbalism and Ayurveda. Berberine’s rich golden-yellow color has even been used historically as a natural dye for materials like leather, wool, and wood.

Today, Berberine is one of the most researched plant compounds and has become a popular ingredient in herbal supplement products around the world. As interest in it continues to grow, so does the importance of understanding where it comes from and how it is sourced.

Unfortunately, rising demand has also led to quality concerns across the marketplace. Some products may contain synthetic Berberine or lower-quality ingredients, while certain Berberine-containing plants, such as goldenseal, face sustainability challenges when harvested irresponsibly. That’s why sourcing matters.

2/2

At Gaia Herbs®, we use HIMABERB® HCl Berberine, sourced from sustainably wild-crafted Indian Barberry grown in its native Himalayan habitat. The harvest is fully traceable and carried out by local communities who are supported through fair compensation and sustainable livelihoods. Harvesting takes place only in government-designated zones that are cultivated for one year and then allowed to regenerate for five years before being harvested again.

To ensure authenticity, every batch undergoes Carbon-14 testing to verify it is derived from natural plant sources and free from synthetic petrochemical adulteration. The result is a high-quality, responsibly sourced Berberine extract that reflects our commitment to transparency, sustainability, and ingredient integrity.

Milk Thistle is a herbaceous annual or biennial plant with a dense-prickly flower head and reddish-purple tubular flowers. It is native to the Mediterranean region and has been naturalized in Central Europe, North and South America, and Southern Australia.

Milk Thistle has an extensive history of use as an edible plant. In the 1st century AD, Pliny the Elder documented its use in his herbal writings. Theophrastus (IV century BC) and Dioscorides (1st century AD) also wrote of its value.

The English herbalist, Nicholas Culpeper (1650) documented his observations on Milk Thistle in his renowned herbal compendium. At the turn of the 20th century, eclectic physicians also incorporated this herb into their botanical practices.

Much of the modern-day research surrounding Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) has been conducted in Germany where it is an approved herb in The Complete German Commission E Monographs.
