Among the most storied plants in North American history, Echinacea has been revered for generations as both a botanical treasure and a cultural symbol. Long before European settlers and American herbalists took interest in it, Native American peoples of the Great Plains honored Echinacea as more than a plant.

It was regarded as a Spirit and held an important place in tribal traditions, stories, and artwork, particularly in intricate beadwork designs. The two species of Echinacea herb Gaia Herbs® uses are Angustifolia and Purpurea.

In the 19th century, Echinacea Angustifolia became widely known among the Eclectic herbalists of the United States. From the 1830s through the 1930s, the plant was a subject of considerable interest and study. While it was attracting attention in the United States, another species would later gain prominence in Europe.

Echinacea Purpurea, commonly known as Purple Coneflower and a member of the daisy (Compositae) family, became the focus of European research beginning in 1939. Researchers concentrated primarily on the fresh-pressed aerial portions of the flowering plant.

Together, these two species tell a remarkable story of cultural significance, botanical exploration, and scientific curiosity. At the Gaia Herbs® Farm, we steward the land through regenerative farming practices that support mineral-rich soil and the growth of potent plants for our herbal supplements.

Our primary source for Echinacea herb (both Angustifolia and Purpurea) in this product is our Regenerative Organic Certified® Gaia Herbs® (Silver Level) Farm in Brevard, North Carolina. From seed to soil to supplement, we oversee every step to create the highest-quality herbal supplements.

Goldenseal is a member of the buttercup or Ranunculaceae family. It is native to rich, moist soils of the Ohio River Valley, West Virginia, the mountains of North and South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and ranges north to New England, upstate New York, and parts of Quebec, Canada.

It was harvested almost to extinction in the mid to late 1800’s in the Ohio River Valley where it was sold heavily in Cincinnati in amounts upwards of 200,000 pounds. Eclectic physicians learned about the plant from Native Americans who revered the plant for its health, cultural, and practical uses.

Sadly, the deforestation of the North Eastern United states, along with demand and over-harvesting, led to this plant's status as endangered its natural range. However, working with wildcrafters throughout Southern Appalachia to source Goldenseal and partnering with experienced suppliers who are deeply connected to the region’s rich tradition of wild plant harvesting, Gaia Herbs® has found a way to thoughtfully and responsibly source this most beneficial plant.

Boring Roots & Herbs, based in East Tennessee, has supplied Gaia Herbs® with Goldenseal and other Appalachian wild-harvested herbs for more than a decade while supporting local wild collector communities and preserving practices that are deeply rooted in Appalachian culture.

Committed to the long-term sustainability of this valuable botanical, our supplier hosts annual meetings and training programs to educate harvesters on best practices for responsible wild collection and resource stewardship.

In addition, we have partnered with our supplier to invest in cultivated Goldenseal production as a complementary approach to sustainable sourcing. This cultivation project that began harvesting in fall 2025, will help to support future supply while reducing pressure on wild populations.
