Grindelia Spp. is a genus of plants native to the Americas and belonging to the family Asteraceae (Compositae), one of the largest flowering plant families. It is characterized by its bright yellow, daisy-like flowers and resinous foliage, and it is indigenous to a wide range of habitats across much of the United States, as well as parts of Mexico and South America.

Commonly known as gumweed, Grindelia species are often found growing in open fields, grasslands, roadsides, and other sunny, disturbed areas where they can readily establish themselves.

The plant’s sticky resin coating on its buds and leaves is one of its most distinctive identifying features and contributes to its common name. Although Grindelia had long been known in various regional botanical traditions, practitioners in the United States did not fully recognize its value until the mid-19th century.

Early botanical records and field observations gradually brought attention to the plant, particularly as interest in native North American flora expanded during this period. As systematic study of indigenous plants increased, Grindelia began to gain a more established place within American botanical literature and herbal plant references of the time.

2/2

Official recognition of Grindelia came with its inclusion in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1882 to approximately 1926, reflecting its accepted status within formal botanical references of that era. This inclusion marked an important moment in the documentation of native American plant species and their integration into organized botanical study.

Over time, it has remained a notable example of a North American genus that attracted scientific interest during the development of modern botanical classification systems in the United States. The primary cultivation sources for Grindelia in this Gaia Herbs® product are farms in California.

Lemon, and other citrus fruits are common in the tropics worldwide. Lemon is believed to be native throughout the monsoon regions of Asia, and to have been introduced to the tropics of the Mediterranean and the Americas.

Lemons found their way to Italy by 200 AD, and are thought to have been cultivated in Egypt and Iraq by 700 AD. They belong to the Rutaceae family, along with other herbal plants like Buchu (Agasthomabetulina), Rue (Ruta Graveolans), and Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum Spp.). They are considered an evergreen tree that can grow up to 20 feet tall, and if the weather allows will continue to grow and fruit all year long.

True lemons actually have sharp thorns lining their twigs, though some varieties have been bred to lose this trait. Lemon is not an original citrus fruit, but rather a hybrid between a citron and a sour orange. Lemon and its citrus fruit cousins became highly valued by Dutch botanists and horticulturists during the 17th century, a period marked by rapid expansion in plant exploration and the exchange of exotic species across Europe.

Citrus plants, including lemons, oranges, and citrons, were especially prized for their fragrant blossoms, glossy evergreen foliage, and brightly colored fruit, which stood in striking contrast to the colder and more subdued northern European landscapes.

As interest in these plants grew, so too did the desire to cultivate them outside of their native Mediterranean and subtropical climates. By the 17th and 18th centuries, orangeries had become fashionable architectural features across Europe, particularly among aristocratic and affluent households.

They reflected not only botanical interest but also status, wealth, and participation in the growing scientific curiosity of the time. Citrus cultivation in these controlled environments helped deepen European understanding of plant care, climate adaptation, and horticultural design; laying groundwork for later developments in greenhouse technology and ornamental gardening traditions that continue today.

Mullein's (Verbascum Spp.) towering flower stalk with golden yellow flowers can be seen presiding over fields and open spaces throughout much of the world, often standing out prominently in disturbed soils, roadsides, meadows, and open hillsides.

The common name, Mullein, is derived from the Latin word, mollis, meaning “soft,” a reference to the velvety, felt-like texture of its large, woolly leaves. These soft leaves form a low basal rosette in the plant’s first year of growth before the tall flowering stalk emerges in its second year, giving it a distinctive life cycle that is easily recognizable in natural landscapes.

Mullein is native to Europe, the Mediterranean region, North Africa, and parts of Asia, and it has since become widely naturalized in North America and Australia. Historically, Mullein has been associated with rural landscapes and traditional countryside settings, where it often grows in sunny, open areas with well-drained ground.

Its tall, upright flowering spike can reach impressive heights, making it a visually striking presence when in bloom.

2/2

Throughout history, different cultures have found practical uses for various parts of the plant. The flowers and leaves have also been used as natural dyes for fabric and hair, producing soft yellow and earthy tones depending on preparation methods and materials used.

These varied applications reflect the plant’s long-standing role in everyday rural life and traditional resource use. For example, Native American cultures have smoked the dried leaves in their ceremonies and for herbal support.
