This member of the Palmaceae/Arecaceae plant family is native to the southeastern part of the United States and the West Indies, where it grows naturally in coastal plains, sandy soils, and scrub land environments. It was traditionally used by tribes such as the Mikasuki Seminoles for making baskets, rope, brushes, and other useful items, as well as for food-related and everyday household applications.

The plant’s tough, fibrous leaves and low-growing, clumping habit made it especially well-suited for weaving and crafting durable materials. It has been used for at least 150 years in North America and has long been recognized as part of the region’s ethnobotanical landscape.

In its natural habitat, Saw Palmetto forms dense thickets that provide important ecological functions, including shelter and food sources for wildlife. The plant produces clusters of dark berries and fan-shaped leaves that contribute to its distinctive appearance in the landscape.

It is commonly found in association with pine flat woods and coastal dune ecosystems, where it plays a role in stabilizing sandy soils and supporting biodiversity within these environments.

The Saw Palmetto Gaia Herbs® uses is wild-harvested primarily in Florida under strict permitting regulations designed to ensure that the plants are harvested at the appropriate times for both healthy growth and optimal fruit quality.

Through the leasing of more than 1,000,000 acres in Florida and Georgia, our supplier has reliable access to saw palmetto berries during the regulated harvest season each year. By owning and managing every step of the process, the supplier maintains high standards of safety, quality, and traceability. Harvesting only mature berries helps ensure elevated levels of total fatty acids and a superior overall fatty acid profile.

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma Longifolia), also known as 'Long Jack' and 'Malaysian Ginseng,' is a shrubby tree native to Southeast Asia, particularly found in the rainforests of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and surrounding regions.

It typically grows in lowland and hilly tropical forests, where it thrives in warm, humid conditions and well-drained soils. The plant is known for its slender trunk and compound leaves, and it is most recognized for its long, slender root system, which has drawn attention in regional botanical traditions for generations.

1/2

One of the most popular and widely recognized herbs in Malaysia, Tongkat Ali root is typically harvested from mature plants and prepared in various traditional forms, and it has been incorporated into local cultural knowledge systems for many years. Because of its prominence in Southeast Asian herbal traditions, it is often referred to as 'Malaysian Ginseng,' although it is not botanically related to true ginseng species.

In its native regions, Tongkat Ali has also been part of a broader forest-based knowledge, where indigenous communities have long understood the characteristics and growth patterns of local plant species.

2/2

This has contributed to its reputation as a valued and carefully sourced botanical within traditional practices. In modern times, Tongkat Ali has gained international recognition and is now cultivated and studied in various parts of the world, including Southeast Asia plantations and select agricultural projects outside its native range.

Its increasing global presence reflects broader interest in traditional Southeast Asian botanicals and their role in cultural, historical, and economic contexts. Despite its expanded cultivation, it remains strongly associated with the forests and traditional knowledge systems of Malaysia and Indonesia, where its use and reputation originated.

Milky Seed

Oats (Avena sativa) are a classic restorative tonic that bridges the gap between herbs and food. Oats (sometimes called Wild Oats or Oats milky seed) are of the natural order, Graminacea or grass family.

Eclectic and physiomedical practitioners used the extract of the green oat seed “in the milk” as a valued restorative herb within the western botanical tradition.

The Milky Oats used by Gaia Herbs® are exclusively sourced from our Regenerative Organic Certified® Gaia Herbs® (Silver Level) Farm in Brevard, North Carolina where they are extracted fresh.

We harvest our oats in the “milky stage” before the seed has hardened into the oats you know in your oatmeal.

2/2

Milky Oats are at their peak potency when they are rich in polysaccharides. To best capture this potency, our milky oats go straight from harvest in the field to extraction in a matter of hours.

Each herb is tested for potency in the field, carefully harvested, and brought to our onsite production facility to be extracted and crafted into our herbal formulas. From seed to soil to supplement, we oversee every step to create the highest-quality herbal supplements.
