Flowering Vine

This climbing shrub is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the United States, ranging from Virginia to Florida and extending westward to Missouri and Arkansas. Its name is derived from the Italian phrase fiore della passione (“flower of the passion”), a reference to the flower’s striking resemblance to symbols associated with the crucifixion.

The plant produces a mesmerizing and intricate flower with delicate, threadlike structures and vibrant coloration that make it one of the most distinctive wildflowers in its native habitat.

Following flowering, it develops into a large, oval, fleshy fruit that is both attractive and edible when ripe. The entire plant has been used in traditional herbal preparations for centuries.

However, research suggests that the stems and leaves contain the highest concentrations of biologically active compounds, making them the primary parts used in many modern herbal formulations.

In addition to its herbal uses, Passionflower is also valued as an ornamental vine, admired for its rapid growth, exotic appearance, and ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Gaius Plinius Secundas (Pliny the Elder) wrote about this plant in his 37 volume Natural History, which served as the basis of scientific knowledge for centuries.

In Greek it is called hypericon, a name that refers to its power "over the image," an old tradition of hanging the flowers and leaves of this herb above religious icons in homes and shrines.

In other regions, the European peasants thought that St. John's Wort protected them from evil spirits, witches, demons, and lightning.

Wild-harvested in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, Black Cohosh thrives in its native habitat, where it has been gathered and used for food and herbal practices by Indigenous communities for generations.

The Appalachian region remains one of the most important areas for sourcing this plant. Working with reputable suppliers is critical to ensuring that harvesters follow responsible collection practices, helping to protect wild populations from over-harvesting and supporting the long-term health of these ecosystems.
