Ginkgo is the oldest surviving species of tree and is often referred to as "the living fossil." Fossil records indicate that it probably originated during the Permian period about 250 million years ago. The tree ranged worldwide during the Paleozoic era and went into decline before the Ice Age, eventually retreating to the mountain forests of China.

Because Ginkgo is the only living species of its family, speaks of the tree’s hardiness. The properties of Ginkgo were first recorded around 2,800 BC. In traditional Chinese herbal practices, Ginkgo leaf has been a recognized botanical with a long cultural history of use.

The Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus Senticosus) plant is found throughout northeastern China, eastern Russia, Korea, and Japan, where it grows naturally in temperate forests and mountainous regions. A hardy shrub, it is well adapted to cold climates and seasonal changes, thriving in woodland environments with rich soils and partial shade. Its broad geographic distribution and resilience have contributed to its longstanding presence in the botanical traditions of East Asia.

In traditional Chinese herbalism, this plant has historically been associated with the concept of expelling 'Wind Dampness,' a traditional term used within the framework of Chinese herbalism.

Today, the plant remains an important part of East Asian ethnobotanical history and serves as an example of the deep connections between traditional plant knowledge, regional culture, and the natural environments in which these species evolved.
