Lemon, and other citrus fruits are common in the tropics worldwide. Lemon is believed to be native throughout the monsoon regions of Asia, and to have been introduced to the tropics of the Mediterranean and the Americas.

Lemons found their way to Italy by 200 AD, and are thought to have been cultivated in Egypt and Iraq by 700 AD. They belong to the Rutaceae family, along with other herbal plants like Buchu (Agasthomabetulina), Rue (Ruta Graveolans), and Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum Spp.). They are considered an evergreen tree that can grow up to 20 feet tall, and if the weather allows will continue to grow and fruit all year long.

True lemons actually have sharp thorns lining their twigs, though some varieties have been bred to lose this trait. Lemon is not an original citrus fruit, but rather a hybrid between a citron and a sour orange. Lemon and its citrus fruit cousins became highly valued by Dutch botanists and horticulturists during the 17th century. Citrus plants, including lemons, oranges, and citrons, were especially prized for their fragrant blossoms, glossy evergreen foliage, and brightly colored fruit.

The lemons Gaia Herbs® uses for the Wellemon® Extract in this product are grown in Southern Spain, and extracted at our supplier's state of the art facility.

As interest in these plants grew, so too did the desire to cultivate them outside of their native Mediterranean and subtropical climates. By the 17th and 18th centuries, orangeries had become fashionable architectural features across Europe, particularly among aristocratic and affluent households.

They reflected not only botanical interest but also status, wealth, and participation in the growing scientific curiosity of the time. Citrus cultivation in these controlled environments helped deepen European understanding of plant care, climate adaptation, and horticultural design; laying groundwork for later developments in greenhouse technology and ornamental gardening traditions that continue today.

Japanese Knotweed

Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum Cuspidatum) is native to Eastern Japan, China, and Korea. In the United States, it is considered an invasive species the same as it is in most other countries. It's considered one of the worst invasive species in the world.

The plant grows rapidly and displaces native species quickly with its large size and is difficult to eradicate due to the way it is able to propagate through its root system. Luckily, the plant has redeeming herbal qualities, which makes it very desirable to harvest.

For one, it is known as a source of the antioxidant, resveratrol. Most of the Japanese Knotweed roots we use at Gaia Herbs® are wild-harvested in Southern Appalachia, supporting U.S.-based wild collectors and strengthening our local wild-crafting community.

Japanese Knotweed was introduced to the United States in the 1800s and has since become an invasive species in many regions. While it is a valued herb in traditional Chinese herbalism, most commercially-available Knotweed is still sourced from Asia.

2/2

By sourcing primarily from Southern Appalachia, we help create economic opportunities for local wild harvesters while contributing to the removal of this invasive plant from native ecosystems. Harvesting Japanese Knotweed can help make space for native woodland herbs and support healthier forest habitats.

Gaia Herbs® is continuing to expand and develop our U.S. supply chain for this plant, with the goal of reducing our reliance on imports from China and increasing our commitment to domestically-sourced plant material.
