Indigenous to Southeastern and Eastern Asia, Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is a flowering plant in the ginger family. India accounts for much of its cultivation.

This perennial member of the Zingiberaceae family has been used for thousands of years in herbalism, as a coloring agent, or as a spice. It is known as Shati in Sanskrit.

Reports of its use in herbalism go as far back as 600 BC in Assyrian herbal accounts and can also be traced to Greek writings from Dioscorides.

In Ayurvedic herbalism, Turmeric has a rich tradition of both internal and topical use and is one of the most widely referenced botanicals in classical Ayurvedic texts.

In Western herbalism, Turmeric is classified as an aromatic bitter and has a well-documented history of use in European and American herbal traditions.

Lemon, and other citrus fruits are common in the tropics worldwide. Lemon is believed to be native throughout the monsoon regions of Asia, and to have been introduced to the tropics of the Mediterranean and the Americas.

Lemons found their way to Italy by 200 AD, and are thought to have been cultivated in Egypt and Iraq by 700 AD. They belong to the Rutaceae family, along with other herbal plants like Buchu (Agasthomabetulina), Rue (Ruta Graveolans), and Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum Spp.). They are considered an evergreen tree that can grow up to 20 feet tall, and if the weather allows will continue to grow and fruit all year long.

True lemons actually have sharp thorns lining their twigs, though some varieties have been bred to lose this trait. Lemon is not an original citrus fruit, but rather a hybrid between a citron and a sour orange. Lemon and its citrus fruit cousins became highly valued by Dutch botanists and horticulturists during the 17th century. Citrus plants, including lemons, oranges, and citrons, were especially prized for their fragrant blossoms, glossy evergreen foliage, and brightly colored fruit.

The lemons Gaia Herbs® uses for the Wellemon® Extract in this product are grown in Southern Spain, and extracted at our supplier's state of the art facility.

As interest in these plants grew, so too did the desire to cultivate them outside of their native Mediterranean and subtropical climates. By the 17th and 18th centuries, orangeries had become fashionable architectural features across Europe, particularly among aristocratic and affluent households.

They reflected not only botanical interest but also status, wealth, and participation in the growing scientific curiosity of the time. Citrus cultivation in these controlled environments helped deepen European understanding of plant care, climate adaptation, and horticultural design; laying groundwork for later developments in greenhouse technology and ornamental gardening traditions that continue today.

Pod

Quercetin is among the most abundant natural flavonoids and is found in high concentrations in plants such as onions, apples, berries, red wine, broccoli, capers, pomegranate, and ginkgo. The Quercetin used in Gaia Herbs® formulations comes from the Fava d'Anta (Dimorphandra Mollis) tree, which is native to the tropical savannah ecoregion of Brazil.

This carefully-sourced botanical ingredient is selected to help ensure consistent quality and purity in the finished formulas. Well-adapted to poor, dry, and acidic soils, Fava d’Anta serves as a pioneer species in ecological success.

Our Quercetin source comes from the pods of the Fava d’Anta tree, a native forest species found in the Brazilian Cerrado and Caatinga regions, where it is sustainably wild-harvested as there is currently no commercial cultivation of the plant. The extract is produced by one of South America’s largest quercetin extractors, which undergoes independent third-party quality audits to ensure high manufacturing standards.

In addition, the supplier maintains sustainability and community programs that support fair social and environmental practices, helping to protect local ecosystems while benefiting the communities involved in the harvesting process.

2/2

By working closely with harvesters and cooperatives, our supplier promotes sustainable harvesting methods that support the long-term health and productivity of Fava d’Anta trees while preventing population declines caused by poor management practices. Because harvesting occurs in natural ecosystems rather than cultivated plantations, this approach also helps avoid land clearing and habitat loss.

Although located in the tropics, the Brazilian Cerrado and Caatinga regions are characterized by arid conditions, with the Cerrado consisting primarily of savannah landscapes interspersed with forest corridors along rivers, while the Caatinga is a unique biome found only in northeastern Brazil.
