Here are three tasty ways to incorporate this new stress support* formula into your morning, afternoon, and evening rituals.
But First: Why Milky Oats & Skullcap?
With so many excellent adaptogens (herbs for adrenal support, stress, and stamina), nervines (nervous-system supportive herbs), and nootropics (calming cognitive supportive herbs) to choose from, why Milky Oats & Skullcap for stress?*
First, the basics.
What Are Milky Oats?
As the name suggests, Milky Oats are oats straight from the common oat plant, Avena sativa.
They are harvested before the mature grain is formed, and they release a nutrient-rich milky substance, then extracted fresh.
Milky oats is traditionally used as a calming nervine or nervous system tonic, and for cognitive support, and have even been described as an oat bath for the nervous system. (1,2)
What Is Skullcap?
Skullcap is a traditional herb used to support calm focus and cognitive function. Its name literally means “to put a cap on the skull/nervous system”, hinting at its calming, centering, grounding, and brain-support benefits.
The two most common forms of Skullcap used in traditional herbalism include American Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), which is used for stress and emotional well-being, and Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), traditionally used for immune, cardiovascular, and neurological support. Gaia Herbs® Milky Oats & Skullcap formula contains American Skullcap extracted while fresh from the Gaia Herbs® ROC™ certified farm. (3)
Says Gaia Herbs® Formulations Manager and resident herbalist Susan Hirsch,
“Both Milky Oats and Skullcap are traditionally considered nervous system tonics or neurotrophorestoratives, meaning they support the healthy structure and function of the nervous system. When combined, they offer stress support that will bring you into calm balance, but won’t make you tired unless you really need to sleep!"
“The calming benefits of Skullcap are more immediately felt, while Milky Oats are more long-term and centering. There are very few nervines that are traditionally considered tonics, though there are many nervines*, but these two can be taken long-term to support the nervous system. They’re also wonderful for grief support.”
*Nervines are herbs that affect nervous system function. Many nervines are calming and even sedating, some, like coffee, are stimulating, but very few are considered tonifying.
Think of this herbal duo as the ultimate nervous system tonic, providing safe all-day stress support from morning to night.

Magic Purple Bubble Milk with Milky Oats & Skullcap
Create a magic stress-free bubble around yourself with this nod to Ayurvedic moon milks.
Moon milks are traditionally made with various Ayurvedic herbs, like Ashwagandha, Turmeric, and Tulsi (Holy Basil), to promote relaxation and help you ease into sleep.
This recipe uses oat milk, wild blueberries for color, flavor, and antioxidants, and the bubble-tea effect; Gaia Herbs® Milky Oats & Skullcap; optional Ashwagandha Root; a natural sweetener; spices; and pure vanilla for a dreamy, creamy nighttime elixir.
Serves 1
Ingredients:
-
1 cup unsweetened oat milk (or your favorite dairy or plant-based milk)
-
1/4 cup frozen wild blueberries + a little extra for “bubbles”
-
1-3 teaspoons coconut sugar, pure maple syrup, raw honey, or your favorite natural sweetener
-
We like the full 3 teaspoons, especially in the cold version, but start with 1 and adjust to taste
-
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus extra for garnish
-
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
-
A pinch of ground nutmeg
-
Optional: 1 capsule Gaia Herbs® Ashwagandha Root, open and empty into the mix
-
This adds a depth of flavor and is also great for sleep and stress
-
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
-
1-2 droppers full of Gaia Herbs® Milky Oats & Skullcap
How To Make (Hot Version):
-
Combine the oat milk, frozen wild blueberries, natural sweetener (to taste), spices, and optional Ashwagandha in a small saucepan.
-
Heat gently over medium heat until steaming.
-
Add 1-2 droppers of Gaia Herbs® Milky Oats & Skullcap and the vanilla.
-
Serve immediately with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon if desired, and enjoy watching the wild blueberry “bubbles” dance on the top.
If you don’t like the “bubble” texture of the blueberries, you can blend the mixture before heating or strain it before serving.
For a deeper purple hue, gently press a few wild blueberries against the inside of the saucepan with a spoon to release their color.
Though traditionally served warm, this magic milk is also delicious cold over frozen blueberries.
How To Make (Cold Version):
-
Combine everything in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth and foamy.
-
Pour into a tall glass and add a few more frozen wild blueberries whole (for the bubble texture) and extra cinnamon on top before serving if desired. The blending gives it a glorious foamy cap that adds to the intense flavor and sensory experience.
- Sip slowly through a smoothie straw to draw up those blueberry bubble gems.
This milk is so relaxing before bed, but it is also tasty as a calming mid-day treat.
Milky Oats & Skullcap FAQs
Q: What does the Milky Oats & Skullcap tincture taste like?
A: This tincture has a very neutral flavor that blends well into various recipes.
If you take it straight or in water, you’ll taste notes of earthiness, sweetness, and a slightly bitter finish.
Q: Will I taste the herbs in these recipes?
A: No. These herbs blend seamlessly into these recipes, though you should feel their calming effects quite quickly.
Q: What can I substitute for a low-sugar version of the smoothie recipe?
A: The tastiest swap would be to add frozen avocado instead of mango and/or the banana, and use all water or sub coconut water for orange juice. Frozen peaches are also a good, lower-sugar swap for mango, though they don’t contain as much magnesium.

There is not enough evidence to recommend either herb for use during pregnancy or lactation.
Always check with your healthcare practitioner before starting any new supplements, especially if you’re taking medications or have pre-existing health issues.
